Whale Experience Tonga
Friday the 25th of September 2020 – Saturday the 10th of October 2020
Arrival Nuku’alofa, Tongatapu
It is advisable to arrive at Nuku’alofa, Tongapatu one or two days prior to departure so you can unwind and get into the island vibe. Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Virgin Australia all fly into Fua’amotu International Airport from overseas.
On Friday the 25th of September at noon we will be met at the wharf for the transfer by boat to Nomuka island. Real Tonga has a daily early morning flight from Tongatapu to Ha’apai departing time 7:00 AM arriving at Ha’apai at 7:50.
Day 1 Your adventure has begun, welcome to Ha’apai
On the 25th of September we will be transferred by boat to Nomuka island. Drop off at the Lolofutu Beach Barn.
Day 2 – Day 9 Saturday the 26th of September – Saturday 3rd of October
Accomodation in safari tents with private deck and large 7 x 5m sun & rain cover with shared bathroom facilities hot-cold showers & composting toilets.The ocean constantly in the background.
The Lolofutu beach barn is not called the beach barn for nothing. Island ponies, chickens, cows and friendly island dogs roam the area. You will enjoy 3 sustainably sources healthy home style meals per day. We will have an additional 4 whale swims and exploration days onboard MV Tropic Bird.
Day 9 Saturday the 3rd of October
Transfer from Beach Barn on to SY Wild Life. Spend the day cruising the islands and relishing opportunities to swim with the whales.
Day 10 – Day 15 Sunday 4th of October – Friday 9th of October
Will be spent sailing around the pristine islands of the Ha’apai Island group- whale watching, swimming with the whales and island exploring. Each night will be spent at an island anchorage that will be decided by the Captain dependent on best weather, safety and good whale swimming areas.
Accomodation is in one of the 3 comfortable double bed cabins, with a shared bathroom. There are many areas to enjoy the scenery, relax on the deck, cockpit and in the saloon. You will enjoy 3 beautiful home cooked meals a day while on board. The last day will be spent sailing from Ha’aipai to the main island Tongatapu.
Day 16 Saturday 10th of October
The sail to Tongatapu, Tonga from the southern Ha’apai group of islands is an open water crossing. It is a great sailing and holds opportunities to spot humpback whales, dolphins and pilot whales. Depending on the weather forecast the waters can be rough at times.

Sunday is a day of rest in Tonga and therefore there are no international or domestic flights, shops are closed, the streets are empty, sports are prohibited, and most Tongans are going to church, feasting and sleeping. Sleep and rest – that’s what the most of the locals will be doing. It is a great way to ease back into the bussel of life. International flights leave Fua’amotu International Airport on Monday.
